We live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but unfortunately, we have one of the highest crime rates in the world, with a number of cars being hijacked or stolen increasing every year.  This increases our risk of becoming a victim, therefore it is important to take the necessary steps in order to ensure that you reduce your risk.

The first thing that you should be sure of is that the rental car is comprehensively insured against accidents and theft because you will be held responsible for any damage or loss to the rental car.

In the unfortunate event of your rental car being stolen, you should phone the South African Police Service as soon as possible and then the car rental company, the quicker you are to report the stolen rental car, the bigger the chance of the stolen rental car being recovered successfully.

Then you should do a quick inventory check in order to determine if other items of value like your ID, drivers licence, bank cards or cell phone is stolen with the car and then phone and cancel the applicable items like bank cards and cell phones. And report any drivers licence or ID that was stolen to the police.

Like we mentioned before, the car rental company can hold you fully responsible for the stolen car if it can be proven that the rental car was stolen due to negligence on your side or in cases where the rental car was not sufficiently insured.
