Check your tyres regularly
Check your tires regularly to ensure that the pressure and thread is up to standard. During wet driving conditions, tyres with insufficient thread increases the chances of your car skidding.
Ensure that your windscreen wipers work properly
If your windscreen wipers leave streaks or struggle to clear the glass in a single swipe, it is time to replace them. Having visibility of what is happening on the road is of upmost importance for safe driving.
Avoid Cruise Control
Driving with cruise control during wet weather can be unsafe because you have little control over the acceleration of the car. If you lose traction, you have to slow down by taking your foot of the accelerator, you will not be able to do this while the cruise control is on.
Steer into the skid
If your car skid, steer into the direction you want the car to go, take your foot off the accelerator and brake firmly if your car has ABS (if your car does not have anti-lock brakes – do not use your brakes).
Drive in the tracks of the car in front of you.
Driving in another car’s tracks will cause less water to be between your tyres and the road, this can reduce the chances of your car skidding. Remember to travel at a safe following distance and to slow down by taking your foot of the accelerator rather than slamming on the brakes.
